If how last Wednesday is any indication as to how my year in poker is going to go, I should quit now while I am behind..
So my buddy Asher and I had planned on heading down to Greektown casino the other day to play in our first big buy in tournament. A hundred bucks it was going to cost and both of us spent the better part of two weeks planning on how we were to spend the two grand plus first prize. All those dreams were shattered when after an hour drive through terrible traffic we get there only to find out the buy in schedule had been changed for the new year.
$250 to play. For me a hundred was a stretch so we both decided to try our best to get back to our local charity room and play the usual thirty dollar Wednesday tourney.
After driving another hour back through the same traffic, it seemed to have shifted we arrive at the Shark club just as the first level was ending.
It was the usual turn out, about 45 people. I happen to sit down in the big blind (BB) with king, 4 off suit a few people limped in and I check. The flop comes King, 8, 7 rainbow. I lead off with a sizable bet of 250, five times the BB. Everyone folds except for the guy Asher and I have nicked named “the guy who calls everything.” With him calling I figure he hit something on the board or has an Ace, he loves chasing. The turn is a four, still no flush no straight draws and with two pair I figure I have to make a move to get “the guy that calls everything” off the hand so i bet big, 2000. He calls, telling me he has to have a king. Hooray, I exclaim in my head, free money! So the river comes an 8 and I check it just so he can bet his king and he does, 1000. Now, for a split second I didn’t like that bet because it screamed value. No worries I thought, I have to call. I proudly show my two pair and he flips over his King, with an 8! “The guy who calls everything” sucked out on my suck out!
Two hands later and slightly on tilt I try pushing someone I thought was weak off her turned straight, with my ace high and am out of the tourney…In 42nd place, leaving me down $30 for the year. To make matters even worse for both Asher and I, not more then 3 hands later Asher gets sucked out on by “Margo” (I’m sure I’ll be writing a lot about her in the future.) with a turned straight against his flopped set of jacks. He finished 40th.
All in all a very bad day for poker but we both agreed, at least we didn’t drop the $100 or $250 for that matter to donk out that fast.
